The US Department of Transportation has proposed requiring the installation of remote-controlled or automatic shutoff valves to all new or entirely replaced gas or hazardous liquids pipelines. Leak detection systems must be able to close valves to isolate a ruptured segment within 40 minutes. The DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration wants to require that remote-controlled or automatic shutoff valves be installed on pipelines with diameters greater than 6 inches.
